Burmese planters chair and stool, with stool

Burmese planters chair and stool, with stool

A 19th Century teak Burmese Planter's Chair the seat in original fine rattan, circa 1880

Profusely carved with foliage and peacocks in full display, the legs having entwined dragons. Each arm is composed of a flat plank with a rounded end of round headed dowel, which rotate out into a leg-rest. When not in use the planks can be stored beneath the arms.

In Burma's intense heat, gentlemen were encouraged to recline, initially foot stools were used for this purpose, however by the mid-19th c. this need was better satisfied by what is now known as a Planter's Chair - a low easy chair with inclined arms and back which can extend out into a leg rest.

With an x-shaped stool of matching rattan.
