George Frampton (1850-1928) 'Knight of the Once', signed and dated 1918
This is an exceptionally rare cast of a previously misidentified model of ‘The Knight of the Ounce’ by Frampton. Only one other version is currently recorded which is in the Imperial War Museum, which has traditionally been identified as St George. Also dated 1918, that cast bears an inscription to Francis L Mond (the great nephew of Ludwig Mond) and has an Air Force insignia on the flag. Frampton exhibited a bronze statuette of this figure at the Royal Academy in 1918. The rather obscure subject seems to be taken from Walter Scott's 1825 novel The Talisman, part of the Tales of the Crusades.
