John St. Helier Lander 'Portrait of Major Romer', signed and dated 1938
A portrait painter born in Jersey in 1869, Lander studied at the Royal Academy in London and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais where he obtained an honourable mention in 1910 and a medal in 1923. An example of his work can be found in the Museum of Manchester.
Major Romer was a member of The Scots Guards and is depicted in his band leader uniform.
